5 Must-See Attractions in the Mall

Malls have become a place for family splurges. But they’re also becoming home to indoor theme parks with rides that dip, spin and whirl.

A massive mega-mall near New York City will open next month with a Nickelodeon theme park, DreamWorks water park and America’s first indoor snow park.

Nickelodeon Universe

The nation’s largest indoor family theme park is a one-of-a-kind place to enjoy rides, meet characters, shop and eat. The seven-acre Nickelodeon Universe is located in the Mall of America and features everything from a Blues Clues toddler play area to a roller coaster named after SpongeBob SquarePants. The park also includes Moose Mountain Adventure Golf and FlyOver America.

The park’s innovative strategy of being inside the Mall of America makes it more accessible to visitors, reducing travel time and costs. Nickelodeon Universe uses a different pricing model than many other theme parks, allowing patrons to purchase a single ride ticket or unlimited rides on a daily wristband or yearly pass. This price-tiering approach increases revenue and customer retention.

While some might complain about the lack of big-drop roller coasters, the 28 rides at Nickelodeon Universe are a good fit for Minnesota’s climate and can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. In addition to the rides, the park has entertainment and character meets throughout the amusement park in the mall year. Look for special Nickelodeon Universe events, such as Toddler Tuesdays or holiday-themed activities, particularly around Halloween and New Years.

If you’re hungry while at Nickelodeon Universe, the nearby American Dream Mall has a large food court and eateries to choose from. You can even get a burger from YouTuber MrBeast at his restaurant in the mall.

DreamWorks Water Park

Splash into fun at the largest indoor water park in North America! Kids and adults of all ages can enjoy this tropical wonderland year-round. Whether you’re looking for a lazy river ride or thrills on the Shrek Sinkhole Slammer, DreamWorks Water Park is sure to please everyone.

DreamWorks Water Park is located inside the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The mall is a massive complex and has tons of things to do for families, groups, or solo adventurers. You’ll find a mix of shopping, food, and entertainment here. If you’re planning to visit, there are a few things to keep in mind before you go.

For one, make sure to buy your DreamWorks Water Park tickets in advance to save money. You can also purchase a Turbo Pass to skip the line at the most popular rides. This is a great option if you’re planning to visit during a holiday or weekend.

When you arrive, check-in is easy and quick. The entrance looks like a hotel lobby, with a line that leads into a hallway. There is virtually no security, which means you can bring in your own food and drink (which is a good thing). There’s a snack stand inside the waterpark but it’s pricey. For example, a small personal pan pizza costs $14 and a bottled water is $4.

SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium

Visit SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium at Mall of America in Bloomington and explore the underwater wonders of more than 10,000 marine creatures. The attraction features several fascinating exhibits, including the world’s only undersea ocean tunnel, a ray lagoon with viewing bubbles, and a Pacific Northwest rock pool with touch-pool amusement park in the mall anemones, urchins, and starfish. It also features a variety of interactive animal encounters that provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

One of the most interesting features is the octopus garden where visitors can get up close to these exotic creatures. Then, they can check out the ray lagoon, which is home to cownose stingrays, Atlantic stingrays, and shovelnose guitarfish. The rays are extremely friendly and will flutter up to the visitors’ faces. There is also a stingray touch-pool where visitors can purchase food and feed the stingrays.

SEA LIFE has recently added a number of new exhibits, including Brave the Rainforest, a rainforest habitat featuring spectacled caiman crocodiles, poison dart frogs, and piranhas. Other attractions include a special Seahorse Kingdom and the largest jellyfish exhibit in the world.

The 1.3 million-gallon aquarium also features a number of educational exhibits and activities, including an interactive quiz trail, a multi-feature submarine play area, and a behind-the-scenes tour for an additional fee. It’s a good place to take a break from the noise and busyness of the mall. It’s also a great stop for families with toddlers. Tots 2 and under are free.

FlyOver America

Soaring above America’s most dramatic landscapes is a truly unique experience that takes visitors to new heights without ever leaving Minnesota’s Mall of America. From the rushing rivers to the snow-capped mountains, the simulated flight ride is a transporting journey with state of the art special effects that create an immersive and breathtaking experience. Glide over the mighty Mississippi River and its deep valleys, the awe-inspiring Great Lakes, California’s Napa Valley, bustling cities, erupting volcanoes and much more. From coast to coast, visitors will travel more than 10,000 miles without even leaving the mall!

Guests will enjoy a pre-flight video that builds excitement for the flight experience. Then, visitors are seated in suspended chairs with their feet dangling in front of a huge spherical screen and the special effects of wind, mist and scents make them feel like they’re actually soaring over some of the country’s most incredible landscapes.

FlyOver America is the latest eagle-eye-view flight experience from Soaring Attractions LP, which also created Vancouver’s FlyOver Canada. The attraction was built in partnership with Taiwan-based Brogent Technologies Inc. and Vekoma. Guests should allow about 30 minutes for the entire FlyOver experience, including time in line, 10 minutes in the pre-boarding zone and a 10-minute flight on The Ultimate Flying Ride. All guests and bags are subject to security screenings and/or searches upon arrival. Weapons are prohibited.
