MIFARE DESFire EV2 4K Secured Smart Card

The DESFire EV2 is the latest generation of MIFARE’s industry leading open architecture platform. It offers improved contactless performance, a longer operating distance of 10cm and is more consumer friendly.

Using 3DES and modern AES hardware encryption, it delivers maximum contactless security with transfer rates of 848 Kbit/s. Its proximity check functionality prevents relay attacks, while on-chip backup management and mutual three pass authentication enhance the protection level.

Security

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 4K is a NXP microprocessor-based contactless IC that meets the requirements for fast and secure data transmission and flexible application management. It features a 4-Kbyte non-volatile memory, a high speed triple DES data encryption co-processor and a unique logical and physical security structure. The IC is Common Criteria EAL5+ certified and provides high levels of contactless smart card security for contactless applications that require the protection of sensitive data such as bank cards, credit card details or electronic passports.

MIFARE DESFire EV2 chips feature an on-chip backup management system and mutual three pass authentication to prevent the capture of encrypted data from the IC’s memory. These features make the chip more resistant to social attacks and more secure than previous generations of MIFARE ICs. The IC also supports the MIFARE SmartApp feature, which allows system providers to offer or sell application space on the chip for new business models without having to share the master key.

The IC also has an anti-tear mechanism to ensure data integrity during a transaction. It uses a unique identifier called a SUN message to generate a unique code each time the IC is read. This makes it impossible to clone the IC, even if a person’s PIN or password is used to gain access to the chip. It also supports rolling key sets, which will allow the user to change their encryption key after a compromise and eliminate the risk of data theft.

Interoperability

The DESFire family of contactless smart chip provides system integrators with reliable and interoperable products that meet the specific needs of the market. Featuring a DES, 2K3DES, 3K3DES or AES hardware cryptographic engine for securing transmission data, these smart cards can be used in multiple applications and are form factor independent.

DESFire EV2 is fully compliant to ISO 14443A 1-4 and has received Common Criteria EAL 4+ certification. It has an on-chip backup management system, mutual three pass authentication and can support up to 28 different applications with 32 files each. Its automatic anti-tear mechanism guarantees transaction oriented data integrity. It can also be loaded with new applications after the product has been deployed into the field.

This makes it ideal for use in a physical access control application where the card may be shared by employees, contractors and guests of an organization. Using the DESFire EV2 chip, you can ensure that only the right individuals have access to restricted areas.

This chip is also commonly found in transportation and ticketing solutions as it offers a high level of security while being reliable in turnstile environments. Its ability to read a wide variety of formats makes it a great choice for a streamlined ticketing environment. This is why many transit systems utilize the DESFire chip for their transport tokens.

Convenience

MIFARE DESFire EV2 key fobs are flexible and convenient. They offer a host of features, including an on-chip backup management system and mutual three-pass authentication. They also support a variety of data configurations, so they can be customized for individual projects. In addition, a MIFARE DESFire EV2 card can be updated with new applications after it has been deployed in the field.

In addition, a MIFARE EV2 card has better read range than a standard contactless smart card, making it easier to use in more places. It also supports the latest hardware encryption, which makes it virtually impossible to crack. This is important for security, since it means that the chip’s contents cannot be cloned.

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 chip is also compatible with existing NFC infrastructures. In fact, it is fully compliant with ISO 14443A 1-4 and has a Common Criteria EAL 4+ certification for card security. This makes it easy to integrate into any existing access control system.

While the DESFire EV2 chip has many advantages over the EV1 version, there are some things to consider before switching to this technology. For one, there is a lag between when the new product is announced and when it actually starts being manufactured. Another consideration is that a number of institutions have invested in EV1 cards and will need to decide whether to switch to DESFire EV2 or stay with what they have.

Performance

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 product family consists of microcontroller-based ICs that secure transmission data using DES, 2K3DES, 3K3DES, and AES hardware cryptographic engines. These chips meet global standards for RF interfaces and cryptographic methods, while incorporating advanced security features such as Proximity Check and key management system.

MIFARE DESFire EV2 can be used to add a variety of applications onto a single card – from logical and physical access control to loyalty and micropayment and transport schemes. It also supports rolling key sets, meaning if one set of keys becomes compromised the chip can quickly switch to a new set, protecting all applications and users from any breach.

With a high operating distance and transaction speed up to twice as fast as MIFARE DESFire EV1, this IC makes it ideal for upgrading existing access cards or adding Smart City services that can be accessed touch-free. MIFARE DESFire EV2’s open design makes it easy to integrate desfire ev2 with other NFC technology such as mobile devices and Near Field Communication (NFC) readers.

The MF3D(H)x2 integrated circuit includes enhanced security features for both the chip and reader, making it ideal for universities who are looking to upgrade from older magnetic stripe and proximity solutions which can’t protect data from breaches. It is Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified and supports a number of open crypto algorithms, including a new transaction timer to guard against man-in-the-middle attacks. It is also NFC Forum Type 4 tag certified and offers a 70 pF option to enable read range optimization for small antenna form factors.
