PVC film (polyvinyl chloride) is a sturdy and durable plastic material used in a variety of print applications. While PVC-based overlaminates continue to dominate the market, non-PVC options are growing in popularity. These include polyester, polyurethane, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. These materials offer advantages such as lower cost and a more sustainable product. In addition, they can provide added protection against oils and minerals.

These overlaminates are a great way to protect and enhance digitally printed graphics. They are available in a range of textures, thicknesses, and finishes to fit the specific needs of your project. Some offer a soft, textured finish while others are more rigid and abrasion-resistant.

Many of these overlaminates are designed to be molded or thermoformed, and can be manipulated into different shapes. Heat Stabiliser

The polymer that makes up PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is a highly flexible and durable material, but it is not as thermally stable as other commercial Glass Window Film plastics. In order to improve its thermal stability, additives must be added to the PVC during processing and later on. These stabilisers increase the strength of the polymer, reduce its thermal decomposition and extend its life. The most common stabiliser for PVC is organotin. These are derivatives of tetravalent tin that provide outstanding performance in terms of colour retention and heat resistance. Other stabilisers include cadmium salts, barium salts and calcium zinc.

These additives protect the PVC from the high temperatures it may encounter in processing, storage or autoclaving. They also prevent the formation of hydrogen chloride, which causes discolouration and degradation. They can be liquid or powdered and come in various formulations.

The best way to make sure your xygraphic pvc film is heat stable is to use the most effective additives available. These stabilisers are usually divided into categories based on their effect on heat, light and oxygen. Those that affect heat and oxygen are known as heat stabilisers, while those that impact light and oxygen are called light stabilisers. Many budget brands use cheap liners and adhesives to achieve their low price point, but this can significantly reduce performance and longevity. It is always worth taking the time to read up on the different types of adhesives available and selecting the right one for your job.

The latest developments include products that eliminate the need for wet application. These are based on the concept of air egress, the release liner has a very fine crosshatch pattern which produces grooves in the adhesive that allow air to escape as it is squeegeed down and allows the vinyl to gently ‘float’ on top of the substrate before putting pressure to fix into place. This helps avoid any bubbles and gives a superior finish. These products are best suited for flat or moderately curved surfaces and are ideal for floor graphics.
