A variety of applications demand a long-term, indoor solution for POP and retail signage, trade show and exhibition graphics. Moreover, some floor graphics require slip-rated materials that comply with nonslip and fire regulations.

Vendors have stepped up to meet this demand with linerless PP products. These offer added sustainability and efficiency for the wide format market.

Durability

PVC film (polyvinyl chloride) is a sturdy and durable plastic material used in a variety of print applications. It can be printed using traditional screen or UV inkjet, and offers high durability and color consistency. Its strength and flexibility make it resistant to damage, including exposure to harsh chemicals, abrasion, shock, and impact. This makes it a good choice for long-term, outdoor use.

While PVC-based overlaminates continue to dominate the market, non-PVC options are growing in popularity. These include polyester, polyurethane, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. These materials offer advantages such as lower cost and a more sustainable product. In addition, they can provide added protection against oils and minerals.

These overlaminates are a great way to protect and enhance digitally printed graphics. They are available in a range of textures, thicknesses, and finishes to fit the specific needs of your project. Some offer a soft, textured finish while others are more rigid and abrasion-resistant.

Many of these overlaminates are designed to be molded or thermoformed, and can be manipulated into different shapes. When heat is applied, the film softens and can be shaped to the surface it will be wrapped around. This can create a tamperproof seal that is ideal for point of purchase displays and counter graphics. They also provide excellent scuff and scratch resistance.

Heat Stabiliser

The polymer that makes up PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is a highly flexible and durable material, but it is not as thermally stable as other commercial Glass Window Film plastics. In order to improve its thermal stability, additives must be added to the PVC during processing and later on. These stabilisers increase the strength of the polymer, reduce its thermal decomposition and extend its life. The most common stabiliser for PVC is organotin. These are derivatives of tetravalent tin that provide outstanding performance in terms of colour retention and heat resistance. Other stabilisers include cadmium salts, barium salts and calcium zinc.

These additives protect the PVC from the high temperatures it may encounter in processing, storage or autoclaving. They also prevent the formation of hydrogen chloride, which causes discolouration and degradation. They can be liquid or powdered and come in various formulations.

The best way to make sure your xygraphic pvc film is heat stable is to use the most effective additives available. These stabilisers are usually divided into categories based on their effect on heat, light and oxygen. Those that affect heat and oxygen are known as heat stabilisers, while those that impact light and oxygen are called light stabilisers. Heat stabilisers are a critical addition to any xygraphic pvc film medical-grade PVC, as they help protect the resin from the high temperatures it may experience during processing and autoclaving.

Adhesive

PVC is a hard and brittle product so it needs to be softened with plasticisers to make it flexible. They can be either longer chained (poly) or shorter chained (mono). Mono polymeric films will experience rapid plasticiser migration over time which causes the vinyl to shrink and become brittle, whereas poly poly vinyl’s will have slower and less migration so will retain flexibility for a much longer period of time.

The adhesive on the film can also have a big impact on performance and application. Many budget brands use cheap liners and adhesives to achieve their low price point, but this can significantly reduce performance and longevity. It is always worth taking the time to read up on the different types of adhesives available and selecting the right one for your job.

The latest developments include products that eliminate the need for wet application. These are based on the concept of air egress, the release liner has a very fine crosshatch pattern which produces grooves in the adhesive that allow air to escape as it is squeegeed down and allows the vinyl to gently ‘float’ on top of the substrate before putting pressure to fix into place. This helps avoid any bubbles and gives a superior finish. These products are best suited for flat or moderately curved surfaces and are ideal for floor graphics.

Printability

PVC film is a highly versatile plastic that can be printed with a wide range of printing methods. It is also easily shaped by heat, making it ideal for thermoforming. This process allows the film to take on various shapes, and it can be cut or trimmed to create precise, customized sizes. It is also lightweight, making it easy to handle and transport. It is resistant to abrasion and can withstand UV radiation, moisture, and chemicals.

Many PVC films are designed to offer specific functional and aesthetic enhancements to fit the requirements of different print applications. For example, some are specifically engineered for light diffusing applications such as backlit menu boards and signage, or meet specific flammability ratings such as UL94. Additionally, many are available with a variety of finishes and surface textures to suit a variety of aesthetic preferences.

For instance, ORAJET(R) 3651 is a digital printable PVC film that provides a high level of durability and clarity to support general print applications. It is compatible with today’s most popular solvent, eco-solvent, and latex ink systems. It can be finished with ORAGUARD(R) 210 or 215 overlaminate for enhanced graphic abrasion and UV protection. It is an economical solution for short-term indoor and outdoor vibrant full-color graphic applications. In addition, it is an excellent choice for social distancing messages and instructional signage in public spaces.
